PEX pipe vs Copper
Why PEX is better than copper pipes
Since time in memorial, most people have preferred the use of copper pipes to an extent that few notice the existence of the PEX pipes. In spite of the copper pipes being hugely popular because of their substantial benefits, the PEX pipes have more to offer.
The first benefit that one gets over the copper tubing is its ease to install. The PEX pipe is more flexible than the copper ones which make them easier to manipulate. They are adaptable to any design and require copper fittings than other tubing thereby reducing the chances of their leaking.
The copper tubing is strong and highly resistant to corrosion even when exposed to direct sunlight, unlike other metals. However, they are susceptible to breakage due to expansion and contraction when exposed to extremely high or low temperatures. The PEX tubing, on the other hand do not get corroded as they are not made of metal. They are strong to resist burst and can hold freezing points of up to 200o Fahrenheit. They are best for extremely hot or cold fluids as they are highly flexible.
Metal is strong and able to withstand the test of time. This is so with copper, it is made of a strong material, resistant to corrosion and flexible. However, it is susceptible to corrosion under certain water pH level which is either too acidic or basic. This leads to their wearing off and production of a strange taste and smell in the water. The PEX tubes, on the other hand do not corrode regardless of the pH levels. This makes them more durable than the copper pipes.
Convenience is another thing that the copper tubes lack. In spite of, them being durable they are subject to damage and when this comes, repairs are inevitable. In most copy cases, shutting down of the whole supply system is a must. However, with the PEX tubes, they have shut off valves which cut water flow to a certain position for easy repairs. They also have pressure balanced systems and can be bent round corners without the need of additional copper couplings as they are flexible.
Finally, due to their extensive use and popularity, the purchase of copper pipes is more expensive. This has made it fall behind the PEX pipes which are readily available and at a lower cost than the copper ones. The use of the PEX pipes helps one save on unwanted expenses hence save more money for other uses.
